According to the Oral Health Foundation 1 in 5 people can’t remember when they last changed their toothbrush! With our busy lives it’s easy to forget the little things but regularly changing your toothbrush is vital for good oral health. To the untrained eye a toothbrush might look fine but over a short period of time bacteria can build up in the bristles and it can become less effective at removing plaque from your teeth. Most dentists recommend that you get a new toothbrush at least every 3 months or even sooner than that if the bristles have started to fray. So, for the sake of your teeth it might be time to ditch the old one and start afresh!
In the age of recycling, it can seem like a bit of a waste to throw away something that might still be useful. It’s estimated that over 80% of us keep our old toothbrushes and repurpose them for a wide variety of odd jobs, from the common to the downright quirky!
Bathroom grime – Whether you want to whiten the grout between tiles, scrub the base of taps, de-hair the plug hole, shine the shower hose or polish the hinges of your toilet seat (yes, really) a toothbrush is perfect for the job.
Buffing bling – Small and intricate, jewellery has some hard-to-reach crevices that only a toothbrush can get to.
Sleek brows – For the beauty conscious, a blast of hairspray and a sweep of the toothbrush will keep those unruly eyebrows in place all day.
Something fishy – The small head of a toothbrush makes light work of cleaning the pump, ornaments and algae-covered corners of your fish tank. Just make sure you clean the brush with fish-friendly products before use.
Animal magic – Hamster and rabbit housekeeping is made a lot easier with a toothbrush, especially when trying to clean out tiny bowls and water bottles.
To a tee – Get to work with a toothbrush and impress everyone on the putting green with your mud and grass-free clubs.
Nailed it – Dirty fingernails are never a good look. Use those tiny toothbrush bristles to clean away the grime and shine those cuticles.
Step by Step – A toothbrush is just the right size for scrubbing mud (or worse) out of the tread of your trainers or shining your fanciest pair of heels.
Playtime – Those sticky little fingers make kids toys a haven for germs but a squirt of detergent, a toothbrush and a bit of elbow grease will soon sort them out.
Abstract art – For messy play on a rainy day you can’t get better than a tub of poster paint and toothbrush bristles for flicking. Your kids will love you for it!
Shiny locks – For lovely shiny hair you need a nice clean hairbrush. Tease the dust and fluff from brushes and combs with your trusty toothbrush.
Pedal power – Cycling legend has it that a toothbrush is the perfect size to get into the nooks and crannies of a bicycle chain.
Clean computing – Our computer keyboards can get pretty grubby. Get your toothbrush into the spaces around the keys and say goodbye to dust, dirt (and probably a few crumbs).
Spot the difference – Use those tough little bristles to work washing powder into fabric and banish stains for good.
With so many uses for your old toothbrush, why wait to change it? For a minimal amount of money every few months you can make a huge difference to your oral health (and clean everything in your house)!
